Do You Know What Developers Actually Do?

Hi.
I’m Bob.

Do you know what developers do?

You’re probably thinking
we build applications,
write complex code,
and create amazing things
using some fancy programming language.

You’re wrong.

Most days,
I fill Excel sheets.

I copy.
I paste.
I update status.

That’s it.

It sounds funny.
It is funny.

But it’s not fun
when you’re the one doing it.

Sometimes I do write code.
Not too much.
Mostly just enough
to remind myself
that I still remember how.

We also have something called quick calls.

Do you know what a quick call means in software?

It means a call
that lasts for one hour.

Sometimes more.
But never quick.

During these calls,
I nod a lot.

Not because I agree.
Not because I understand.

Because my camera is on.

I nod
so people know
I’m alive.

We also have night shifts.

And for night shifts,
we get allowances.

They give it to us
like candy to a kid.

Just enough to make you smile.
Not enough to make you question
why you’re awake at 2 a.m.
talking about an Excel file.

We also have team meetings.

Do you know what happens
in team meetings?

Someone asks
if the Excel work is completed.

Someone says
it’s in progress.

Someone says
they’ll check and update.

Then we schedule
another meeting
to talk about
the same Excel work.

This is not a complaint.

I’m not angry.

Maybe I’m . But i can’t do anything.

Some days,
we build great things.

Most days,
we update Excel.

Anyway ,
I’ll see you again .
I have a meeting now .
