Maybe you’re wrong.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this? A friend tells you about a guy you don’t know personally, claiming he’s a bad guy. Then, a few days — or even years — later, you meet him and realize he’s actually a really nice person. Or maybe you’ve heard terrible reviews about a product or a movie, but when you try it yourself, you’re completely satisfied. This is exactly why you shouldn’t believe everything you hear or see .

“The greatest wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” — Socrates

People are Different

Think about it: you and I, we’re completely different. We have different tastes, preferences, and priorities, and we see the world through different lenses. What works for one person might not work for another. Imagine this: your shoe size is 8, and mine is 9. You’re comfortable in size 8, and I’m comfortable in size 9. Now, how can we compare these two and then say, “This doesn’t fit me”? This is exactly what happens when we compare ourselves to others. We seek different things, we learn different things, and what’s right for you may not be right for me — and vice versa. So, if you’re looking for validation from someone who isn’t like you, you’re making a mistake.

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” — Theodore Roosevelt

The Right Way

Have you ever felt like you were doing something right, but everyone else was telling you to do it differently? Ryan Holiday, in his book The Right Thing Right Now , says:

“Just because everyone else is doing it a certain way doesn’t mean it’s the right way.”

Take Giordano Bruno, the 16th-century philosopher who argued for a heliocentric universe and the idea of an infinite universe with countless worlds. He was executed for spreading “dangerous” ideas. Crazy, right?
“Those who are not looking for truth are seeking comfort.” — Socrates

We live in a world where the “right way” is often just the way most people are doing things. The right idea or the right person is usually the one with the most supporters. But history has shown us time and again: that’s not always the case. If you truly believe in something, you need to stand for it, no matter what others say. Why waste your energy caring about people who don’t care about you, or those obsessed with their social media likes and comments?

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Learn and Unlearn

Here’s the thing: we’re all learning every single day. But growth doesn’t just come from learning new things — it also comes from unlearning things that no longer serve us. Think about it: just like a tree sheds its leaves in the fall or a river deposits its load, we too must let go of outdated ideas and beliefs to make room for the new. During this process, we might mess up. We might not have all the knowledge on a subject — and that’s okay. Being wrong sometimes isn’t a failure; it’s just part of the learning journey. As Bruce Lee said, “Be like water.” Always flexible, always adjusting.

Trust Your Own Experience

The world will always have opinions, judgments, and trends, but nothing can replace your personal experience. In the end, you’re the one who truly knows what works for you.

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” — Steve Jobs

Don’t let others shape your reality based solely on their own experiences. Take time to form your own views, test things out, and trust your own journey. Your experiences are unique to you and hold a deeper truth than anything others could tell you.

Question It

Before you believe something, before you take it to heart or let it fill your mind, ask yourself:

  • Is this really important?
  • Who stands to benefit from this?
  • What if I’m wrong?

Taking a moment to ask yourself these questions can save you so much time and energy. And who knows? You might just meet someone special along the way. Life has a funny way of surprising us, doesn’t it?

Life is magical, my friend. Don’t take it for granted.
